Crazy lady!!!

October 7th, 2006

Of the insane/inept people I deal with on nearly a daily basis, this lady definitely takes the cake. Let me set up the situation:

I go to my parents (whom own a restaurant) to pick up some dinner and there is some crazy lady yelling up a storm about calling the police and putting my parents out of business and sending them off to jail. Next to her is some like 300 pound man. Since I just got there, I had no idea what was going or why the she was going of like she was on Jerry Springer. As she leaves, she plays some video on a cell phone say I got you on video and you going to jail!

I’m a bit lost at this point and stay out of it. She leaves after pretty much getting no where. I kinda get the story from my parents, the crazy lady was apparently the mother of the 300 pound man I mentioned earlier. However, she claims that her son was only 16 and was able to purchase cigarettes from my parent’s store. I wasn’t there when that happened so I have no idea, but typically my parents will ask how old they are and if they are 18 or older and they look it, then ok, sell them their cancer sticks. And yes, sometimes they’ll tell us they are only 16 or 17, well no cigarettes for you! Not like it matters though, they’ll just go to some other store that will be even more lax and sell to them.

Now back to the story, crazy lady and her 300 pound man son leaves the store.  I get ready for dinner when crazy lady’s “sister” shows up/aunt to the 300 pound man. She goes on and on about the whole thing. Though the motive becomes clear when she says settle out of court among the other things of calling me stupid, gonna lose the business, go to jail, etc. She even goes as far as to say they want hush money or they’ll take us to court. Then she throws in her sob story of how her nephew is only 16 years old and has asthma and just got out of the hospital.

Now, just fucking seriously, how stupid must those people be?

-Why would your “16 year old son” videotape himself purchasing cigarettes illegally?

-Why would you be coming to complain about your son doing something illegal?

-Why aren’t you being a parent and disciplining your kid for doing something wrong?

-If your kid has asthma and just got out of the hospital and is smoking cigarettes, don’t you think there is a bigger problem at hand?

-Some how being a parent means taking your kid with you to try to scam a business to give you money because your kid has done something wrong?

I had to seriously hold back a laugh once I realized their intentions. Hell, I almost wanted to call the police for them and see what they would think of their little ploy. If you want to scam someone, pick someone other than my dirt poor parents whom just get by. Don’t know what kind of crazy world those people live in, but their alleged case would never see the inside of a courtroom, much less a judge’s desk.

And just for kicks, I looked up what would be the punishment for a violation of selling to a minor, first offense is $250. I don’t know what the hell they were hoping to get, should of gave them a dollar so they could go claim that McDonald’s double cheese burger were responsible for making her son so fat and needing to go to the hospital. Ugh, fuck you dumb bitches for wasting my time.

Summary: Nano error with fix

October 6th, 2006

Started getting these errors when I deleted my Nano playlist in iTunes
Errors:

“Songs on the iPod “clear’s iPod” cannot be updated because all of the playlist selected for syncing no longer exist.”

Or

“The iPod “clear’s iPod” cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50).”

Fix:

1) To fix the playlist error, I connected I it to another iTunes library (on another computer) to get a playlist back on the Nano. When I connected it back to my computer, it was able to create a new playlist.

I still got the unknown error even after fixing the playlist error. It seems it’s basically due to an update in the iTunes software that manages the disk for you. Once it automatically does the sync and fails, it disconnects so any changes after this point doesn’t work resulting in the unknown error.

2) The fix for this, is to make the changes fast when the Nano is first connected, before it disconnects.

Tips:

-Have iTunes opened before connecting the Nano

-Make the necessary change quickly and apply

-This same fix can be applied for the playlist error, create a new playlist and set the Nano to sync from it before it errors and disconnects.

10/14/06 Added Tip!

I’ve basically found that the iTunes software disconnects the Nano to quickly if no changes need to be made, making it virtually impossible to make any changes to the Nano. So what I’ll do is create some work for it to do, so that it doesn’t disconnect as quickly, allowing me to slip in some changes. By some work, I mean changing the playlist so it’s forced to update. The best way for me so far is to create a new playlist and back up everything to it. Then in the playlist that the Nano syncs with, remove everything. It will take some time to update that. Then of course, you can copy the playlist back after you’ve had a chance to make the changes.

And I know some people are landing here because they are having the same errors I had before, please comment to let me and others know if these fixes and tips worked for you or if you have a new tip/trick to add. Thanks!

Why do you make me so angry Apple?

October 6th, 2006

My first Nano suffered from with some type of genetic dysfunction. All worked very well at first and I was nearly ready to forgive them for the simple Shuffle crapping out on me. However, the greatness I experienced was to good to be true and very short lived. The Nano become an expensive paper weight as none of the buttons would work, it would turn of, but nothing after that would allow me to do anything. Resetting, Restoring the Nano endless times did nothing but cause me great frustration. I finally decided to RMA it, a box was delivered from Apple to send the Nano back. Then a miracle! The Nano started working! I was ecstatic because I had to take a long trip to New York (involving, a Van, a Bus, a train, and a Car to get to my dentist and back). The Nano actually worked for most of the way to New York, but then I heard a terrible song. I did what I thought would be the sensible thing, skip it. I pressed the button and it did nothing! The horrible song kept playing, so I tried turning it off and on. This made matters worse as when I turned it back on, it didn’t do anything anymore! I was madly disappointed yet again.

Now on the way back from New York, the Nano worked, luckily enough, saving me from awkward conversation with my seat mate. However, soon I would discover that it would no longer download new songs no matter what I did, leaving me with the same songs over and over. I do tend to listen to a few select songs, but the list of songs on there had been a random sampling from my library that the software picked because my entire library wouldn’t fit on the overpriced 1 GB player.

This new issue being different than the original issue I reported to Apple, I contacted their support people to see if I could update them on the issue I had now before sending it back. Well, they opened a new case and sent a new box for me to send it back in. I received emails about the whole thing which was pretty nice and I did get a new refurbed player back. Oxymoron I know, but it was a refurbed player with a new case, even including my original engraving.

It seems that the new player has worked ok, I can finally put my Nike + thing to use. Though the whole working and then now working with eventual RMA made me completely miss my goal of just 10 miles in 4 weeks. So I’ve started it as a new goal, hopefully not doom to failure again.

Of course I spoke much to soon. Perhaps this would be defined as user error, rather Apple’s hardware and software being total crap, but maybe someone will learn from my error. I didn’t like the playlist I had in my iTunes, so I decided to delete them and start new ones. I didn’t think much of it, but when I went to sync my Nano, it completely flipped out as the original playlist it synced with were no longer there. So it did the best thing it thought possible, clear out the Nano! Then any attempts to sync resulted in messages saying that:

“Songs on the iPod “clear’s iPod” cannot be updated because all of the playlist selected for syncing no longer exist.”

applesuck1.jpg

Then it attempts to sync only to get:

“The iPod “clear’s iPod” cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50).”

applesuck2.jpg

An unknown error doesn’t help me much in troubleshooting, tried the usual resets and attempted restores with no results. Wasting much time on getting the stupid thing working, I noticed that it was the iTunes software that was causing the Nano to not sync. How? When the Nano is plugged in the computer, it’s reported as a USB device. With the iTunes software on, it would show up for a few seconds then disappear (I was viewing it in My Computer). Now, without the iTunes software, it would show up and remain there.

I attempted to troubleshoot from the iTunes end, uninstalling, reinstalling, installing an older version. These didn’t work because the older versions were not compatible with some library file and just wouldn’t load. The new version gave me the same errors.

So I decided I would try booting up my laptop and see if it would sync. And success, it popped up:

“The iPod “clear’s iPod” is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library?”

applesuck3.jpg

I selected yes, let it do it’s thing, then I connected it back to my PC where I got the same message and it created the playlist again so I could sync. Hurray, flipping works!

Of course this happiness was short lasted yet again as I couldn’t add any additional playlist or add calendars to sync. The solution? Basically I needed to trick the iTunes into working. How? Have iTunes open, plug in Nano, quickly make the changes and hope they take. Otherwise the unknown error occurs….
