Hate the mall, but can’t stop the shopping

November 26th, 2006

For the record, never ever going out to the store on Black Friday. I don’t even know why I did this year. I actually planned on going at 5 AM and maybe one of those first people in the store, but I guess doubtful as people had been waiting all night. Plus the fact I ended up sleeping in because I stayed up until 2 or 3 AM.

Anyhow, get up at about 9 AM, and head off to store to maybe get the digital camcorder. I mean who seriously wants a miniDV tape camcorder? I drive to the store and the place is packed, cars are everywhere since everyone and their grandmas are at the store. I figured I got lucky when I was able to get a spot in the parking lot. But, as I pull in, my entire car shakes. Doh! Doh! I had hit the truck next to me :(. Well, I get out and examine the truck, he basically had no damage what so ever except some of my paint on his the rubber part of his bumper. My car on the other hand has a dent and paint chips coming off.

Not gonna be a good day I thought…. The camcorder I wanted was sold out, so I wanted to opt for a Canon ZR500 for $200, but I was persuaded by the sales guy to get a JVC GR-D370 for $30 more. At the time 32x zoom seemed so much better than 25x zoom, check out was a whole other ordeal… I get out of the parking lot without hitting any other cars and head off to work.

Being a slacker (well, actually for once I arrived at work like 15-20 minutes early!) I had to look up the reviews for this unknown JVC camcorder and well they sucked! Much worst than the cheaper Canon model I initially had picked. I teeter on whether or not to go back to store to return the POS. The deal is sealed once I learn that an additional cable needs to be purchased to hook it up to my computer.

So, today during my lunch I went to store thinking that the crowd would have died down because everyone went out yesterday. Boy oh boy, was I ever more wrong. The exterior lights in the parking lot had gone out, so there were state troopers directing traffic in the mall which was a mess. I finally get to the parking lot of CircuitCity and had to circle around the building before I could find spot and luckily not hitting any more cars even with the poor visibility. All those cars meant there was lots of people inside, but I decided to think well I’m just returning something, shouldn’t be long, everyone else is buying stuff.

Of course, I was wrong, the customer service line was the longest even though they had like 5 people behind the desk. So begins the wait wait wait…. Finally, it’s my turn, returning the camcorder was easy. The other part of my trip was to pick up some stuff I ordered online, it was kinda no surprise they couldn’t find all the items. However, the rep substituted up for me, which was nice. At first, she substituted down, but I think just by error. Unfortunately, the whole getting “express pick up” took at least 15 minute if not more. I leave and don’t hit anything leaving the parking lot. The traffic is horrendous on the way back to work, and of course I’m late getting back.

So all in all, wasted 2-3 hours, dented my car, and no digital camcorder.

On the online front, I was able to place an order for a 32” LCD, but I don’t think I qualify for the $150 “one day” rebate because I ordered at 2:30 AM, technically the next day. But, if I were in CA, it would still be the same day, I’m mulling over if I’m gonna cancel or not. At least that purchase, took me all of 30 minutes to place (I forgot my password and had to wait for the email…). While, still a moderately good deal without the rebate, I could certainly wait longer for the TV, I’m sure it will be on sale again, I’m not dying to have the TV…..

More and more I think about, 32” ain’t all that big, maybe I should wait and spring more for a 37” or a 42” or even a 50”! Of course my house is dinky and no so accommodating for large TVs, so I have to go with a wall mount LCD. Or maybe I get a new house ;). Yep, definitely got issues…

I need to stop with the spending, my credit card will be maxed out in no time, I had to start carrying an additional credit card because one just wasn’t enough. My car goes in to “surgery” tomorrow, which is about $300 to replace my control arm bushing. I have no idea what that even really is, but apparently it’s what causes my car to drive shitty at low speeds. Now, the kicker is that I went in for them to look at my brakes which I had estimated to be about $100 for the set, but now it’s $300 for some weird part. Plus, my check engine light has been lit for the past month or so, engine is running “lean” and power driving switch. Those aren’t even being looked as part of this repair, and they want $85 to do a diagnostic! Um, yea right, all you do is hook up the scanner to the bottom of the dash and the computer does it’s thing. I’ve already pulled the codes anyhow…. O2 sensor which is about $30-$40 and that power steering switch as ridiculous as it sounds is real and runs about $40.

Spending

- Car repair $300+

- Big TV $500+

- Wii and/or Xbox 360 $250- 650, console only

- Car insurance bill $2k

- Spring tuition/ Winter tuition $4kish +

- Digital camcorder $200

- Misc x-mas presents for the kids $??

- Vacation $??

- New laptop $??

Calculated over $7k, and $6k of that is necessary, I’m gonna go cry in a corner.

Ummm….

Teen charged with killing girl to get cell phone

BALTIMORE — A teenage girl allegedly stabbed a Baltimore girl to death in a robbery attempt to get her cell phone, but all she got was a sandwich, which she ate while walking away from the crime scene, police said today.

Lataye King, 16, has been charged with first-degree murder along with Kendrick McCain, 15, in the Nov. 7 slaying of 17-year-old Nicole Edmonds, who was returning home with her brother at about midnight on the city’s light rail from their jobs at a fast food restaurant.

“They were making their way home when they were brutally attacked by two individuals,” said Col. Frederick Bealefeld, chief of the police department’s detective unit.

Nicole’s 16-year-old brother, Marcus, fled the attackers. He kept in touch with his sister by cell phone after they had been separated. During the first calls, Nicole had not been found by the would-be robbers, and she urged him to hurry to where she was, Bealefeld said.

“When he went to the spot where he anticipated finding her, she was no longer there and he rang her cell phone again,” Bealefeld said. “But obviously by that time, the attack had occurred and he used the ring tone, her ring tone, to track down where she was lying mortally wounded on North Avenue.”

Bealefeld said Marcus sensed they were being targeted for a robbery while riding on the train. At their North Avenue station stop, Marcus and his sister tried to run. At first, the pair tried to rob Marcus, but he eluded them by running along the train tracks. They then turned their attention to Nicole and ran her down.

“We believe that Lataye King wielded the knife, and we believe that Lataye King in fact took Nicole Edmonds’ life on November seventh,” Bealefeld said.

Lataye allegedly took Nicole’s purse and rummaged through it, finding a sandwich Nicole had brought from the Wendy’s restaurant in Anne Arundel County where she and her brother worked.

“The only thing of real value that she got from this is a sandwich that she was able to get out of Nicole Edmond’s purse,” Bealefeld said.

Bealefeld said the attack appeared to be random.

Police arrested Kendrick on Thursday, when police received information from his family. Investigators located additional witnesses, enabling them to focus on Lataye, who was arrested early Sunday at the home of a male friend in Suitland, Bealefeld said. Police also have acquired videotape from the train as evidence.

There were two other people with Kendrick and Lataye, but police say they are witnesses and not suspects in the case. Kendrick and Lataye were being held at the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center.

However, I still question the sanity of my professor Richard Weiss for BUAD309 Management & Organizational Behavior. That fucking says something.

To be fair, I am 99% failing the class and some of it is my fault for not jumping ship when I had the chance. But that’s how I am, I’m not going to abandon ship just because it’s sinking, mostly because I can’t swim anyhow.

Joking aside, this guy is among the worst professors I’ve had and this class by far is the absolute worst. Just going back a post ago:

“Leadership Ability: Those who have the most leadership ability are most able to be leaders”

Believe, there have been days where things made LESS sense and I didn’t have my camera with me.

The book we use is so horrible, I would burn the damn thing if I hadn’t spent so much money on it. I read it and so much of it is obvious bullshit, I’m almost inclined to stick this in my bathroom and use the pages to wipe my ass because it would actually make the book less shitty. The professor even admits the book sucks, but thing is he says he and the faculty of UD know better. Well, if you know better, where is your book? Don’t the students of UD deserve to learn this knowledge that you claim to know better than this pathetic excuse of a textbook? The professor further goes on to claim that previous edition of this book was “better” without so much BS material to sell the book. Well, then why the hell did you choose to use the brand new book? Why not freaking use the previous edition? We would have all been able to save money using that version instead of this printed toilet paper.

Then there is his “style” of teaching, or what I better defined as his psychopathic/ sociopath lying. It’s mildly funny the first time you kinda joke about something absurd, like claming to have known the guy we are talking about in the book, thereby making you at least 90, BUT when you consistently say things like this, it makes me worry about the validity of anything else that comes out of your mouth. I mean, I don’t think there has been a person we talked about, the he didn’t claim to know. It’s a small field, but guess what, you can’t exactly defy time and have known them all.

Everything is made perpetually worst by the combination of these 2 things, because I’m told the book is wrong about so many thing and at the same time I don’t believe anything you say. So if you say the book is wrong, I don’t know how true that might be. Well, I actually think the entrire book is wrong…

Personally, I find it ironic that this class’ purpose as defined by him was how to get people to do what you want and I can’t even believe the shit that comes out of his mouth. Plus his rice a roni and “field trip” incidents have me questioning whether he belongs in front of a classroom teaching college students or serving them from the drive thru windows of a McDonalds.

I did talk to the guy about my grade outside of class, he was ok, but more so put words in my mouth. Which I think is a good thing, because I was about to just spill out all this about his class. He was overall pleasant in comparison to the arrogant ass he is usually like in class.

Only in America?

Railroads appeal $24.2 million award in high-voltage wire injuries

Associated Press

LANCASTER, Pa. — Railroad companies appealed a $24.2 million federal jury award to two men burned by a high-voltage wire when they climbed on top of a parked railroad car in a city rail yard.

Amtrak and Norfolk Southern Corp. attorneys asked a federal judge to reverse the verdict, grant a new trial or reduce the amount awarded to the men.

Joseph F. Roda, an attorney for the plaintiffs, Jeffrey Klein and Brett Birdwell, told the federal court jury that catenary wires, which carry 12,500 volts and power locomotives, are a hidden danger because a person can be shocked even without touching the wires.

Klein and Birdwell were 17 when they climbed up on the rail car on Aug. 10, 2002. Electricity arced from the catenary wire to Klein, leaving him with severe burns, and Birdwell received lesser burns trying to help Klein.

Paul F.X. Gallagher, an attorney who represented Amtrak and Norfolk Southern, told jurors the teenagers were trespassing and should have known the dangers of climbing on top of a railroad car.

U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence F. Stengel, who presided over an 11-day trial, will make a ruling on the railroads’ requests within the next few months.
Yes, let me trespass on private property then sue the owner’s when my stupid ass gets injured. I can’t believe they were awarded MILLIONS for this, that’s insane. It’s like screw working, let me go stand near the railroad tracks and lose a limb then sue Amtrak/CSX for millions because I was incredibly stupid.

Tasers and UCLA

Basically a student didn’t have their ID in their library so they were asked to leave. They didn’t, so the cops came and the kid wants to be a smart ass about it so his ass gets fried!

They released a statement here, now not to be racial, but the kid’s name is Mostafa Tabatabainejad. That makes me fucking suspicious of him already. However, even before I saw that, I thought he got what he deserved.

I always have my school ID with me, even while not at school. It’s kept in my wallet thing along with credit cards and my driver’s license. Why, you wouldn’t have this at all times is beyond me. I mean, what if a bus hits me and I’m splattered beyond recognition on the pavement? I would want them to identify me as soon as possible. That was a little morbid, but in all seriousness, just seems stupid to leave without ID.
Now, this kid was asked for ID, which he could not produce, so he was asked to leave. This seems fair, but the kid didn’t leave. Now, if you don’t leave and don’t have ID, then I’ve got reasonable suspicion that you are up to no good. For the safety of everyone, I would escalate it up. Then if you want to a little bitch about it, yea I’m gonna taser you. Life has consequences kid!
Though, back to the point, it’s not like the cops are just going around looking for people to tase. Certainly not in a crowded UCLA library, if you got tasered then it’s because you deserved it. Don’t even think about suing you fucking idiot.
And of course this wouldn’t be complete without the YouTube video.
